A castle town spreads out in the center of a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides. Sasayama Castle was built in 1609 by Tokugawa Ieyasu at the request of the Tenkabushin (a shogunate petition), as a defense against the daimyo of western Japan and as a base for attacking Osaka Castle. The townscape surrounding the castle ruins, including the samurai residences and the Kawaramachi merchant houses, has inherited history and tradition, and still conveys the good old days.
